Inlays or Onlays
What are they?
Inlays and Onlays, also known as indirect fillings, are dental restoration techniques which are well-fitting, stronger solutions to small tooth damage and tooth decay. They may cost more upfront than traditional fillings, but often last longer, potentially saving money over time. Check with your dental provider about insurance coverage and payment options for these dental restorations.
Inlays and onlays offer a better alternative to regular fillings by preserving the healthy parts of your tooth. This focus on conservation can help patients feel reassured that their natural tooth structure is being maintained, which supports long-term dental health and confidence in their smile.
Do I need an inlay or an onlay?
An inlay is a pre-moulded filling that is fitted into the groove of the tooth. Inlays are used for teeth that have been broken, fractured, had tooth decay or other structural damage. Inlays are able to fix the chewing surface and are almost invisible when matched to the tooth colour. They can be made from a tooth-coloured material such as ceramic, porcelain or composite.
Dental Onlays are similar to fillings; however, they also extend onto the chewing surface of a back tooth and are thus on the tooth. Onlays are thus able to fix the chewing surface and tips of the tooth. An impression is taken of the teeth in order to make a crown that only fits the cusp of the tooth perfectly. Once the onlay has been moulded, it is fitted and bonded to the tooth. These days, onlays are also made from a tooth-coloured material such as ceramic, porcelain or composite.
Onlays and inlays are able to strengthen the tooth up to 75% more than fillings. Your dentist will be able to tell you if you are in need of overlays, inlays, fillings or if a crown or bridge should be used.
How long does a dental onlay or inlay take to fit?
An impression of your bite is carefully taken by your dentist during your first appointment, ensuring precision. While the inlay or onlay is meticulously crafted by a dental technician in a lab, a temporary filling is applied to protect your tooth and support comfortable chewing.
Inlays and onlays can be made from gold, porcelain, or resin materials, offering options tailored to your needs. Dr Chodree will discuss the best material choice for your tooth's placement and your smile's aesthetics, ensuring you feel involved and confident in your treatment plan.
After the inlay or onlay is custom-made, you will return for a follow-up appointment. During this visit, the temporary filling is gently removed, and the custom-made restoration is carefully fitted and bonded. Dr Chodree will ensure a comfortable fit, helping you feel reassured about the quality of your treatment.
